guest post - ruby red lipstick && clashing hues

Hey y'all! Ruthanne here! as you already know, I'm on the road for a week, having a little birthday road trip! Annnnnyway. I'd like y'all to meet my sweet, sweet friend Britney! I asked her to guest post while I was away and I am soooooo excited to share it with you! She's such a doll, and absolutely hilarious, not to mention she's hilarious. So, I'll shush now, and let her take it away! :)

-------------------------------------

Hello Lovelies!!!
I'm Britney and the ever so sweet Ruthanne asked me to do a little guest post!! I am so honoured and absolutely smitten to be here to talk to you all! To start it off I have a short video where I tell you about the three makeup items I use. Seriously, its just three. I might start wearing eye shadow or something but right now all I use is these three things; eyeliner, mascara and lipstick.

I sure do hope you liked my video!! If you couldn't tell by my accent I live in the far away land of New Zealand. I've been overseas once in my life (last year) and I am a vegetarian!! I'd visit the zoo any day and have four dogs, one cat and as you saw in the video some ducks have taken to the front lawn! I write for my blog Lemonwood and Honey and its really all I do in my spare time. I am currently studying at uni which sometimes can be a drag when you have so many assignments to complete!! BUT life is good! Its much better than good actually. Its extraordinary.

On to the fashion side of things?

I believe that fashion is more than just following trends. To me fashion has become a way to show my personality, to show my mood, to experiment and really, to just have fun. Its not about the latest designer fad or must have. Its about you! And that is the most important thing. If you love wearing jelly shoes (do you remember those?) then so be it! If you want to wear a tutu to school (which I have, it was petticoat actually) then do it!! Living by rules, thats not living at all! I used to be rather judgmental on what other people wore. But I thought, who am I to judge? That girl, that guy, she/he feels awesome the way they are dressed. And that is all that is important.

Everyday I am getting to know myself more and more. Because of that I find that it reflects in what I wear. I have a craving to go on a crazy shopping spree (money permitting) and buy everything that reflects who I am but at the same time pieces that last. I want to buy clothes that suit my body rather than a stick thin model. Because my body is just as beautiful as theirs and so is yours!! I want to buy socks and sew little pom poms on them because, although I might not look like I walked off the run way, I think its really cute! I want to be me and use fashion as an outlet to show that!!

As for my outfit, I have been wearing this jacket like crazy this past few weeks. It comes from Dorothy Perkins, which I fell in love with when I went to London last year. The dress is from Romwe and I just adore the tapestry like pattern. I love mixing patterns together and having fun. I suppose the one thing I would add to this outfit is a necklace.

Final words?
Thanks so much Ruthanne for inviting me here! It was a blast and really broadened my blogging ideas. I haven't done an outfit post in so long and never like this!
I wish that I could meet every single one of you and help you to see that something about you that makes you extraordinary. Its there! I know it. When it comes to fashion, dress to suit your body shape, dress the way you like and have fun! Life can be scary but it is the scariness that makes it beautiful! Remember how amazing you are and you will be fine. More than fine. You'll be extraordinary.

country girl + senior portraits.

driving iphone pic + snapseed basic editing
if you haven't figured it out yet, I consider myself a 'country girl'....not because I'm from the south, because obviously I'm not...but because it's not too far from the truth. I may have grown up in the mountains, but what you see above is just 20 minutes from my house. and man is it gorgeous.

we have dirt roads. lakes. rivers. cows. ranches. cowboy boots. jeans and plaid. we're a true western town, if you ask me...heck. we were a railroad city back in the day. anyway.

I'm getting my senior portraits done here (a little further down the road, but it looks the same) and I need some ideas for outfits. I want to do one classic vintage outfit, jeans and my cowgirl boots + some blouse, and then one more. ideas? if you feel so inclined...tweet me a polyvore or pinterest link...I need all the help I can get.

ModCloth Swimsuit Love

Ohhh my. I love, love, love these swimsuits. I'm also trying to justify spending almost $100 on a swimsuit....dear me. But it'd be worth it, I know it. Summer is so close! I can't wait!

Just love these suits and had to share! ♥

currently loving from modcloth;

I had some time to waste an incredible amount of time looking through look at the new stuff that's been coming into ModCloth the past few weeks, and wanted to share my favorites with you!

This lovely dress is so pretty! Pink, simple, cute and sweet....It's so precious!

Now, IF I just so happened to have $110 to blow on a dress, this would be the dress I'd buy...most definitely. And I'd wear it with my jean jacket - the sleeves rolled up/cuffed and my cowboy boots. Want!

I don't normally like jeans from ModCloth, let alone light wash, but I loooooove these!

And ladies, is this coat just so me or what? Piiiiiiiink! *wink*

This pretty dress is sure to make you smile.

The Too Much Fun dress style is basically one of my all time fave's from MC - the picnic purple and Daisies prints are all too presh to pass up! Will definitely be making myself some of these.

And last but not least, this gorgeous dress is so very pretty and so very desired by this girl!

Happy Thursday, friends!

sunday best.

Sweater: Kenneth Cole
Jeans: American Eagle - real flare
Black Oxford Heels - gift - no idea
Bangle: little shop downtown

That was today's outfit:) sorry for no color. My brother took all the pics and was having issues. So I fixed them (ha......quote unquote) with black and white...he'll learn eventually. :)

By the way - it FINALLY snowed after 30 days of no precipitation - which is #10 on the list of most days we've gone without a drop of anything in my town. Insane! So happy though.

Happy late sunday :)

an everything kind of post.

This is an everything kind of post. I like those...just kind of all mushed into one post, a slight bit overwhelming, I suppose, but it gets a lot of things out of the way. With some things I'd never dedicate a whole blog post to. Such as what I'm about to tell you.

Remember those cowboy boots I ordered last week?

They came today.

And I was so sad when I put them on.

They just weren't me. At all. They were too high, 2.5 inch heel. I didn't realize how terrible it would look....I'm a short chick, and when I wear that high of a heel on a cowboy boot every.single.day, I think it'd probably look like I was trying too hard. Sigh.

So, lucky for me, with my dad's account I was able to just print out a return label and ship them right back. Oh, the glories of free return shipping....didn't lose one cent of the $134.99 I paid for them. Bam.

However - the other two things I ordered - the pink flat iron and my (amazing) iphone case - are absolutely perfect! My flat iron is to die for (it's pink, what's not to love?) and so is my case. My best friend saw my case and said it was a pretty color - I said "Isn't it?!" and then proceeded with: "I picked it cause it reminds me of the color they used for vintage pyrex a lot. It's so pretty." And she looks at me, gives me the GREATEST best friend look EVER, and goes, "Really!?! Pyrex? Oh, dear Lordy. Only you, my dear, would associate an iPhone case of THAT color with DISHWARE. VINTAGE dishware, at that. I love you."

Needless to say, it was a fantastic conversation.

Anyway, my hunt for boots is continuing. I'm thinking I just need to take a trip to sheplers or the boot barn 40 minutes away. Which is where we always go grocery shopping - but I hate making my mom go out of her way, cause the day is already exhausting as it is. Meh.

Oh, and here are a few things I'm absolutely in love with right now!

I'm gonna make a dress just like this - fabric pattern and all - to wear when I finally find the perfect cowboy boots. So cute.

Can we please talk about the blue of this dress? And the elegance? My word - gorgeousness!!!

I love this - definitely my favorite color of green. It's so pretty! I wish I had more afternoon teas to go to....oh wait, I don't have any afternoon teas to go to. My bad.

Yellow. Oh my goodness. I must make this one too. One of my new years goals (I think resolutions are silly! more on that later this week) is to make a dress a month. I can do it, right?

SO so so so so pretty. The blue is just gorgeous.

We couldn't let this post go without a pink dress...man! So sweet.

All of these dresses are from ModCloth - I haven't checked any of my other favorite stores/sites lately, I  should get on that. Sorry to overload you with more ModCloth!!

And! And! And! I'm not ignoring the fact that it's a new year - I'm just taking a lot of time writing my posts about it. But, there are a few things that you can expect to be happening on this blog in the coming months.

For one, I want to start posting videos of my original songs - I have a ton, and I want to share them, since songwriting, singing, and playing the piano are such big parts of my life. I'm thinking once or twice a month. but who knows.

I want to do more outfit posts - and I'm going to try and get one up once a week. I'm thinking of playing off of one of my previous ones - I titled it  sunday best  - and doing my outfits from every sunday - what do you think?

I've also decided that I want to start my weekday wanderings weekly post up again. I really enjoyed sharing my week in pictures with you! You'll continue to see the honestly series and favorite photo friday, which will probably take turns every other friday. I don't want to lock myself into having a "feature" or "series" post I need to do every. single. day. of the week. That would bee too much, and you'd never hear about what I was actually doing! I also want to add in a "start your month off with" post - to share what I'm loving at the moment - blogs, fashion, music, whatever.

Anyway, I'm done now. I hope you all are enjoying your new year so far!

xoxo,
Ruthanne

p.s.
I've discovered two more Ruthann(e)'s in the blogging world! I'm so amazed - I've never in my life met another Ruthann(e) - ever! Go check their blogs and shops out, just cause!

cool, huh? -r

20.12.11

the quickest, easiest, and cutest outfit ever.

My brother was being a dork (again) while taking the photos. I couldn't help but crack up.

Jeans. A long sleeved t-shirt - right now my favorite is white. It's simple and makes any color scarf pop - and then the scarf itself. I personally like to pair it with my cowboy boots and a belt too :)

My "I'm smiling like I'm warm and happy" face and my "brrrrr" face. All unintentionally captured. Bahaha.

My favorite. You'll be impressed after I tell you this though. My brother took this while he was hanging upside down, on our monkey bars, in basketball shorts, a t-shirt, and socks. Skill.

So I'm not much for taking a long time with my clothes or hair or makeup. It helps that I live in a place where pretty much no one does that, but still. On those mornings I wake up 30 minutes late and I'm like, "Shoot, I need to get going...", this is my favorite kind of outfit to throw on during the school year. And for the record, generally, it's scarf weather during my entire school year. Just depends.

And just so we're clear, it was 23 degrees outside at this time. It was also 4 o clock.....and sunny. Talk about cold.

This week has already been great though. I spent yesterday making my tiny gingerbread house - and then went to our local Safeway and sang carols with my friends for salvation army. Almost everyone who passed told us it was "much better than the bell." and dropped some kind of money in. It was so nice and wonderful.

Today was filled with the wrapping of Christmas presents, rehearsing the song I'm doing for Christmas Eve services, and just breathing. I can feel a lot of changes and redirecting coming up in my life soon, and I'm so excited for it. I know God's going to take me somewhere great in the next couple years. I know He has some crazy big plan for me that I can't even comprehend, and I've just been sitting in awe of that lately. So magnificent.

Hope you had a wonderful tuesday! :)

xoxo,
Ruthanne

Vintage Anne Fogarty Dress

So remember that time I promised to post about this dress twice and never did? yeah. See, I took photos, and then hated them but I still never got time to retake them, so I just decided to use the ones I have, finally. Since I have nothing better to do....{read: I should be doing school but instead I decided to be lazy and edit photos.}

So, here it is! My lovely and most favorite vintage find yet! And for only $15! I had to have it. There was no resistance.

I love the color - it's so fantastic. And it sparkles - what's not to love! On top of that, it's Anne Fogarty, for crying out loud!!!! Do you know how amazing that is? No? No?! Oh dear me.

You must know.

"Anne Fogarty was born in 1919 near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia.  Early in life Anne had determined that she wanted to be an actress, so she studied drama at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Insitiute of Technology.  At the end of her course, in 1938, she moved to New York City.  While looking for acting jobs, she took a position as a model at Harvey Berin, a well-known Seventh Avenue maker of high quality dresses.
When Fogarty was finally offered an acting job, she went to Berin to quit her position.  To her surprise, he pointed out that she had a flair for fashion and an excellent eye for detail.  He offered to let her keep her modeling job, while having the in-house designers train her.  She took him up on the offer, and she also attended design school at night.
Before long Anne left Harvey Berin and went to a company called Sheila Lynn, where she modeled and designed.  She met artist Tom Fogarty, who became her husband in the early 1940s.  During the next several years Anne Fogarty worked in various positions in the fashion industry, learning the business as she looked for a design job.
She was finally offered the long-awaited job.  In 1948 she went to Youth Guild, a firm that made teenage dresses.  It was at Youth Guild that Fogarty first designed what would become her signature look - full-skirted dresses worn with petticoats beneath.  In 1950 Fogarty took her distinctive styles to Margot Dresses, a producer of junior clothes.
For the first time since the Edwardian era, adult women were putting on petticoats - a necessity to achieve the desired tiny waisted, full-skirted silhouette.  The first petticoats she designed were of netting, but she worked with Gracette lingerie to develop a new type which was made of nylon "horsehair."  Fogarty was often her own best advertisement, as she had a tiny waist and her own designs suited her perfectly.
This look remained very popular through the mid 1950s, but fashion in general was beginning to feature a more narrow line.  By 1956 Fogarty was designing not only her old favorite - the Paperdoll silhouette - but also a fitted sheath with a high, narrow waist. But no matter what the shape, Fogarty's dresses were rarely trimmed, and were, more often than not, made of a solid color fabric. Velveteen was a favorite.
In 1957 Anne Fogarty became an in-house designer for Saks Fifth Avenue.  She designed not only dresses for Saks, but also all the items that added up to the Anne Fogarty Look: shoes, scarves, lingerie, hats and jewelry.
She also wrote a book, Wife Dressing, in 1959. The book has caused some modern writers to criticize Fogarty, as the book's title implies that she believed a woman needed to dress to please her husband.  And while there certainly is a measure of that typical but dying 1950s philosophy, the book is really more about how to always be appropriately dressed.
In 1962 Fogarty opened her own firm, Anne Fogarty, Inc. She continued to make her fitted dresses, and added A-line dresses, often with an Empire waist.  By the late 1960s she was making lovely peasant styles in both mini and maxi lengths.
In the mid 1960s, Anne Fogarty started several different design collections under the Fogarty label: A.F. Boutique, Collector's Items by Anne Fogarty and Clothes Circuit. When Fogarty retired in 1974 and closed her business, some of the labels survived under the label of Leonard Sunshine, her long-time business partner.  After her retirement, Fogarty continued to do free-lance design work.  Her last collection was for Shariella Fashion in 1980, the year of her death."

Awesome, no? I think so. I mean, really. she was one of the top designers of her day - and now her dresses can run for up to hundreds of dollars.

Like this lovely piece - $225 on Etsy. Oh dear me.  ·  Or this one? $189 on ebay.
